It is useful to become familiar with some common terms before you start to use the mailing list. The terms are presented in order of those that are used most often. Subscribing is when you sign up to receive mail from a list and possibly become a participant. Unsubscribing is when you leave a group and wish to no longer receive any mail. You will not be able to post email to that list either. The archive is where all the old posts that people have made to the list are stored. You can search the archive to see what has gone on before. The web-interface is a set of webpages which control your use of the mailing list. This works through a normal internet address and requires you to log in before you can change your settings. URL is a common anachronism for Uniform Resource Locator, which often translates to a website's address (for example CfBT's URL is http://www.cfbt.com) Each email message carries with it a subject which describes the nature of the email. Message threads are a collection of messages which are about a common theme and are sorted by the emails' subjects. |
